چکیده
Equipment Required Sterile prepackaged UAC and UVC sets are available in most units and contain most equipment required. This includes: dressing drapes, measuring tape, forceps, scalpel, dilator, suture scissors, three-way taps, syringes, needles. In addition, umbilical cord tape, suture material and antiseptic solution. Heparinised solution is needed for UAC flush. Full sterile scrub and gown are necessary.

Estimating umbilical catheter insertion depth in newborns using weight or body measurement: a randomised trial.
OBJECTIVE Incorrectly positioned umbilical venous and arterial catheters (UVC and UAC) are associated with increased rates of complications in newborns. Catheter insertion depth is often estimated using body surface measurement. We wished to determine whether estimating insertion depth of umbilical catheters using birth weight (BW), rather than surface measurements, results in more correctly po...
متن کاملOptimal Line and Tube Placement in Very Preterm Neonates: An Audit of Practice
BACKGROUND Placement of endotracheal tubes (ETTs) and umbilical catheters (UCs) is essential in very preterm infant care. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of an educational initiative to optimize correct placement of ETTs and UCs in very preterm infants. METHODS A pre-post study design, evaluating optimal radiological position of ETTs and UCs in the first 72 h of life in infants...
متن کاملA new technique for transumbilical insertion of central venous silicone catheters in newborn infants
AIM A new technique allowing placement of umbilical silicone venous catheters (USVC) is described and compared with percutaneous silicone venous catheters (PSVC). METHODS Data were retrospectively recorded for 198 infants with USVC and 141 infants with PSVC. RESULTS Overall rate of complications was low and comparable in both groups: thrombosis 1.2%, catheter-related sepsis 3.5% and mechani...
متن کاملInfectious risk associated with arterial catheters compared with central venous catheters.
BACKGROUND Scheduled replacement of central venous catheters and, by extension, arterial catheters, is not recommended because the daily risk of catheter-related infection is considered constant over time after the first catheter days. Arterial catheters are considered at lower risk for catheter-related infection than central venous catheters in the absence of conclusive evidence. OBJECTIVES ...
متن کاملReview of recommendations to prevent and reduce catheter-related bloodstream infections
ABSTRACT Aim. We sought to review studies regarding interventions to prevent or reduce catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSIs). Background. CRBSIs are associated with peripheral and central intravenous catheters, including nontunneled central catheters, tunneled central catheters, peripherally inserted central venous catheters (PICC), totally implanted intravascular access devices (por...
